Option 2: Discover Freiburg
You will find a historic and modern town situated between the river Rhine and the Black Forest. Freiburg dates back to 1120, with a long, prosperous and sometimes troubled history, with long periods of Austrian and shorter periods of French rule. A walk through Konviktstrasse will convince you of the perfect reconstruction of the historic town center. Freiburg's landmark is its beautiful cathedral, built from 1200 onward and completed in 1517. It is surrounded by a number of historic buildings, e. g. the Kornhaus (1498, reconstructed in 1970) or the historic Merchant's Hall (Kaufhaus, 1520 – 1530).
Today Freiburg is an attractive town with 200 000 inhabitants with prosperous small and middle businesses. It is also a town of learning and research, home of a university dating back to 1457, now one of Germany's "Exzellenzuniversitäten", and home to five Fraunhofer Institutes and two Max Planck Institutes.
The "trinational" region around Freiburg where Germany, France and Switzerland meet, is known for its hospitality, good food and good wines. Visit one of Freiburg's numerous restaurants and cafés to find out for yourself. By the way, a magnificant view over Freiburg is from Dattler Restaurant, easily accessible by monorail from the Stadtpark.
Enjoy Freiburg and come again!
